The plight of Emergency Services in tough economic times.
Many Fire and EMS departments, whether career or volunteer are currently or have recently gone through their communities budget process. For some it may effect the food you put on the table, the shoes you put on your kids feet, the upgrade or replacement of SCBA, a new piece of fire apparatus or an ambulance. No matter what the make up is of the department that you belong, the economy should be of great concern.
Each and everyone of us at one time or another should have thought about the "what if" scenario with the economic times we are in. It is very easy for us to sit back and criticize or be jealous of our fellow firefighters and EMS techs who have faired better than ourselves. We should all be thankful for what we have compared to other parts of this country or other countries in the world. Yet, should we settle for second best? Should we be content with what is thrown to us? hell no!
Remember, our fight for the piece of the budget pie is not over. With the uncertainty of the State Budget and likelihood that the aid to Cities and Towns will likely be slashed that should leave us all with a feeling of uncertainty and cause for concern.
The best solution is to remain professional in your duties, remain professional with your presentations and your proposals, be vigilant, do your homework and make professional and informed proposals to your citizens and those who control the purse strings in your community. Show how you can benefit your communities and how valuable you are and how valuable you have been. Try some new initiatives and a better marketing approach. Show your communities how you provide value for their dollars.
For god sakes knock off the stupid childish crap that makes us all look bad, and can only come back to haunt you and hit you when they are passing out the almighty dollars. Don't give them any ammunition to take away from you or your department. Do your part for yourself, your department, your command structure, and your union leadership to make their battle for the budget dollars more defensible.
